I think it depends on how you live life in general, it's not just what happens on holidays, I was taught to care about other people and help when I can, I am a great believer in karma, I work hard and have a great life, I like to share my good fortune sometimes.

How could being kind to another person in any small way ever be considered anything but positive? Personal gratification? Hell yes! most people feel good when they help others and feeling good is nice, if it was painful to help others the world would be a big black hole!

You are asking what we think, so here goes.

The fact that you have thought about it enough to post this thread, that you are aware you could help and quite proudly choose not to, in my opinion makes your post quite arrogant, you can't plead ignorance. I hope that you have actually posted this thread just to get a good response, because if you are truly asking in such a casual manner a question of such importance that is very sad, to be a shallow person suggests no depth of soul, heart or character.

It's good for the soul to be selfless now and then, I tell my kids that when they do something negative like lie, cheat or be selfish that their bright shiny soul gets a dark smudge on it and when you do a good deed it gets a little polish. Shallow, lazy, selfish? who knows but it sounds like there are a few smudges you could get rid of, try helping someone, you might like it and make the world a little nicer at the same time, good for you, good for everyone!!
