This is a FYI post...
After a dozen years of going to Bali for several months during our Eastern Canadian winter armed with nothing more than high concentration Deet insect repellent, this year the rabies outbreak had me concerned. Stray dogs usually are roaming everywhere and more a bother than a concern. So we trekked off to a travel clinic with arm outstretched for the protective jab.
Discovered several things; firstly that you need three needles spaced over 3 weeks so, right off the bat, we didn't have enough time as we're leaving January 2nd. Apparently you need all three to be protected- that is significant. Secondly they didn't even have the vaccine as it is so rarely requested - on special order only. And thirdly, it costs $250 for each of the three injections, so my husband and I would have laid out $750 each for the prophylactic needles.
My husband quipped that we will buy a treadmill with that money and, to enable speedy retreats, will practising running every day instead. And the travel nurse suggested carrying a big stick. (Really!) Bottom line is we didn't get the shots and are presuming that all strays have been euthenized or innoculated before we arrive. And we will avoid Monkey Forest.
