it's a sad fact that most aid given by wealthy contries to poor ones comes with considerable strings attached. Re Ausaid these strings include guaranteed contracts for Australian companies, money targeted to areas of high importance for Aus govt. like security and military sectors and so on.Self-interest is central. I read somewhere that an estimated 90 % of Australian aid to countries in the SEA and Pacific regions boomerangs back to Australia.How much reaches the people in need? Mind you having said that probably not too much of the Visa money goes to those in need either.
