We have been to Bali for the last three years - just got back couple of days ago. Each time we stay in Seminyak/Legian or Tuban area for most of our stay and then do a couple of nights in Ubud. For our next trip I want to just stay in Ubud for about 7 nights as I absolutely love it up there. There is so many nice restaurants and we have discovered the best spa this time - beats any others we have seen. There is great shopping also. We took kids with us this time and they enjoyed the Elephant Safari park and the monkey forest. There is heaps other places close by too.
We have stayed at several places but I will suggest that you get something close to the centre of Ubud as we have stayed out a bit and while the resort is lovely its easier especially with children to be able to walk out of your hotel and be in the street where everything is close. Ubud village hotel was good for this reason and nice. There are lots of places to stay.
