Some travel agents receive the tickets (paper) & hold them at the office in the safe etc until closer to the time of the clients departure.
This ensures the client does not lose them in the meantime.
They don't always notify the client they are there to be picked up until a month or less before.
If you are travelling closer to the date you booked & paid, the tickets are usually handed over when they arrive.
Agents issue an itinerary & receipt as evidence of your booking before you get your tickets.
Some people book 6 months ahead or more (especially from Perth) to ensure they get the dates & accommodation they want as flights from Perth are/have been heavily booked or booked out.
When we booked in March (from Perth)for later in the year flights were nearly fully booked for the dates/times we wanted.
Our tickets are being held with the travel agent.
E tickets are a different matter as the details can be faxed, printed off as evidence of booking at any time.
As mentioned by Bluey a copy like this is needed (and should be kept) for your departure in Bali as it has to be shown/checked (just like a paper ticket) before they let you into departures area.
