At home here we have the same type of safe as is usually seen in hotel rooms in Bali ($29 from Bunnings). It came with instructions on how to over-ride the combination. So it's not at all difficult to access an in-room safe if you know what to do - and many hotel employees would have this knowledge. Just think of the number of people who would leave Bali & inadvertently lock their safes. Do you imagine they buy a new safe each time? No way.

For important stuff & large sums of money I prefer to use safety a deposit box at the hotel reception provided that I can use my own padlock in addition to the hotel's key.
