I have travelled to Jakarka, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Bromo, and Ijen... and absolutely loved Java. The volcanos are amazing and the people are very friendly.
One thing I would say is to be aware of distances - the can be quite big. It is one looong bus ride from Jakarta to Yogya. Consider flying if you arent already and are short on time. I would definitely recommend going to Borobodur - what a magnificent temple. Bromo is breathtaking. Why not slowly make your way to Bali from Jakarta by land? Or fly to Yogya and go the rest of the way by land? There are lots of things to see. Mount Ijen was my favourite part of Java. It is an amazing volcano that many many local men climb every day to gather sulphur and make their livelihoods. An experience that I will never forget.
