A work colleague just retired and left me a book titled 'Guide to Bali' written by Rae Hogan and published in 1974!

What a ripper. It covers a bit of the history, religion and culture of the locals and has a 'Travellers Guide' section. Interestingly, the book advises that there was no colour photo printing available in Bali back then and even the limited B&W printing was of poor quality.

Only five hotels were listed in Sanur (La Taverna the most expensive at US$17.50 /day) and two in Kuta.

It even has a photo of the water palace and gardens at Ujung that was taken before it was almost destroyed by the eruption of Mt Agung (20km away) in 1963! The eruption unfortunately killed 1600 people and left thousands homeless.

What a different place Bali was then!
