Baggage

Have checked the archives, but can't really find the answer. Travelling to Bali next month from Syd. We are from the Gold Coast. So my travel agent tells me the allowance is 20kgs, both with Garuda and domestic? We are a group of 4 adults. How much hand luggage can we have, she wasn't sure? We are flying with Virgin then Garuda. How strict are Virgin? Can we just take 2 suitcases over, but on the return can we buy those big bags in bali and use those? So coming back into Oz we would have 4 bags, eg one each?
