I just inquired at the Commonwealth and got the lowdown on charges for a transaction in Bali:
1. The owner of the ATM (not the Commonwealth, they don't have any in Bali) charges AUS$5 for every transaction (including A/C balances)
2. The Commonwealth charges AUS$1.80 for every transaction on a non-Commonwealth bank ATM
3. The Commonwealth charges AUS$5.80 for each foreign exchange transaction
That gives a total of $12.60 every time you get some rupiah in Bali. A pretty hefty charge. Oh, and there's a AUS$5 per month charge for the savings account that I use only for Bali (protection for an attempt at a rip-off), so we can add another AUS$60 per year to the costs.
I'm considering going back to TTs, they are much cheaper and there are many more places that they can be used.
Someone please tell me I am mistaken.
