Was this recently? because I also know there were no standby tickets available for end Dec until end January as all flights were full.
ALL airlines overbook flights to account for no-shows.
I'd say they were just the unlucky last ones in. If everyone turns up, someone is offloaded. That is why, particularly in peak times, that it pays to get there early.
As they arrived after the suggested check in time (2hrs) they missed out. Telling them you're there won't help if there are no seats.
They also don't sell standby tickets for Jetstar (as you said, there are no offices there).
