Hotels are far too expensive for long term. A house would be a far better deal. Drop into the Funky Monkey (next door to Jasmines Kitchen) Chrissy the English part owner is a good source of info. She can also put you in contact with Putu who has been a great help to many westerners. While in Funky Monkey ask to meet Ricky (an Aussie expat). He has lived there for a number of years. Above all listen, you will be suprised how much you can learn and therefore not make the same mistakes that numerous other westerners have made.
Or go to The Tropis and have a chat with the manager (also named Putu) he can be a great help. Another option is to ask for the whereabouts of a German guy named Markus. He can be a great help and can tell you a few things about the area and which places to avoid.
