often the best way is to go to the area you want to live and look around, and ask at the local warung nasi or kiosk. Often they will put a sign up indicating the house is avail for contract. You will also find that often people want a 12 months contract (payable in advance). You will pay a higher price per month for 6 months, sometimes you are better off taking the whole year so you always have a 'home' in Bali. depends on your situation and finances. Feel free to negotiate on price, maintenance that needs doing, and you can draw up a rental contract to make it more official.
Also, from my personal experience, if you involve a local to assist you, they will put something onto the price for their cut. Nothing wrong with that, it is the way things work there. But you can save yourself a lot of money if you find the place yourself. If your family is local that can help to.
