Backpack or suitcase?

Ok Im a female so I like my clothes :P But I started packing my suitcase and didnt get halfway full BUT I know of some things I want to buy there that wouldnt fit if I only brought a backpack/bag. BUT I also want to travel around and not just stay in one hotel. Is bringing a small-ish suitcase OK to get around to say, 4 or 5 different cities?? Or should I bit the bullet and just take the bloody backpack?
