how long is the drive around Bali?

I'll be in Bali for 10 days.
Is it ok to station myself in Sanur, and do day trips around the island?
Or should I pack up and check into new hotels as I travel around the island on a rented scooter?

I know Ubud is more central.. but I think I'd like to be on the beach most of the time.
