We used them in July. My husband doesn't want to use suitcases again they were so sucessful! Even light luggage can weigh 3-4kg. That's a lot of shopping weight. Here's what I did:
Secured the zipper to the white loop with a tampertell.
Took a roll of string with me and wound it into squares (like noughts and crosses) all over the bags.
Also took a couple of rolls of packing tape and wound this all over the bags as well as the string.
Our bags were fine. We mostly packed them with soft goods, shoes and handbags. Didn't put anything in them with with sharp edges. We took one suitcase and put anything fragile in that. Our luggage did look rather strange but who cares - we bought a lot home and didn't have to pay any excess or go through that hassle (as we have in the past). I would not be silly enough to think that they would survive baggage handling without any extra help - tho' I have seen many bags around the world that have been fine. So go ahead and use them so you can shop till you drop. Have fun!
