Melasti Beach Resort is very good. My wife and I have been to Bali 11 times and I have stayed at Melasti Beach Resort twice. It's a typical 4 star resort in Legian. It backs onto the beach and it's very clean and well presented. The staff of course are friendly. It's about a 500m walk to the start of the main shopping area in Jalan Legian.
The hotels can be a bit fussy about a third person. You can of course have a "guest" stay over night or 7. If you ask they will stay you have to pay for a 3 person room. As far as a trip I would go up to the volcano at Kintamani. It's a good trip up there and the volcano is spectacular. You will see the real Bali on the trip there. The trip up there and back will take the best part of a day. I'd take a local tour guide in a car not a bus. We usually hire a car (about $20/day) and drive ourselves. It's easy if you pay attention but be very careful in Denpasar, full on traffic and it's easy to get lost!!! Either way it's great fun and a real adventure. You will love it.
