Where to keep our passports?

Hi,

This is our first time to Bali and we wonder should we carry our passport in a body pouch inside our shirts or keep it with the hotel counter safe? We are told not to leave it with the hotel as it is not safe. Also how much and where to rent a bike or car in Kuta area?
