We're Americans and have been going to Bali yearly, sometimes twice a year if we can swing it, since 1995. We will be going back next summer and feel very safe there. Having said that, we also stay away from very crowded clubs and restaurants, and haven't stayed in Kuta for years. That's not because of any feelings of unease, but we prefer other areas. Also, we don't wear any clothing that screams "USA", but that's just common sense.
Americans are definitely in the minority in Bali as it's such a long flight to get there, but I hope you don't deny yourself the opportunity to see what a lovely place Bali is. The Balinese are delightful and will do their utmost to make you feel at home.
I think every thinking person now takes into account how safe they'll be wherever they travel, but you can go anywhere and be at risk. If you use common sense you'll be fine.
