what licence you get either from home or from Indonesia. At the end of the day two things are definite.
One is that a foreigner CANNOT sign any binding/legal agreement in Indonesia. Therefore it is technically illegal for you to hire/rent anything at all. You are NOT covered by insurance regardless of what may be said or written. If a drunk Indonesian falls off a cliff on to the road, and is run over by your vehicle, it is YOUR FAULT, and you will have to pay... lots!
Secondly, if you are targeted for a "fine" aka donation, it matters nil the state/class/issue of your licence: you pay regardless, just ask any local! If they get stung without just cause, what makes anyone from overseas think they might be exempt?? A piece of paper, wherein it is possible the Officer may not even be able to read accurately?
Hire a car with a driver for about 250,000 to 300,000 a day, and DO NOT get a guide/interpreter. You will have more fun at far less cost!
