and with all due respect I do not think that aplying for residency & work permits quite falls in to the general category of a tourist, and in this regard perhaps I should have been more specific. It is still my belief based on advices recently received that any non Indonesian cannot sign anything legally in Indonesia and be protected by that signing in the same way as one would reasonably be expected to be protected in the western world.
Although I elect NOT to post JBR's and such, this does not mean I do not still travel to Bali & other international destinations. My passport shows entries to Indonesia (aka Bali) in March 2005, USA in April 2005, Bali again in June 2005, Hong Kong & China in July 2005 and again Bali in August 2005. Not that these entries are by any means significant or relative to my posting. If locals are no longer 'fined' randomly then I stand corrected, and maybe since August Bali really has done a "turn around" in relation to corruption. The legality or otherwise, of hiring/driving on Bali is something I would not personally like to contest in the local Court in Denpasar! Others are more than welcome to do so, I am happy to read about it in the papers if it ever happens!
