1st time to Bali

I am travelling to Bali with my husband and 2 teenage sons in July. It will be our first time, all are experienced surfers and besides a little shopping we are going for the surf. I would love to know whether we should attempt to rent a villa and if so who and where is good or should we stick with resorts. What resorts are good that overlook the ocean. Thanks for your help.
