If your thinking about a Villa, maybe have a look there first.
We have not stayed at a Villa before, so cant comment too much, although a lot of people do and all enjoy the privacy of it.
If you are thinking of a hotel, depending on your budget you should look from Kuta to Seminyak. There is a great range of accommodation at various prices. We have stayed at 3 places along the beach - as in walk out the back door (so to speak) of the hotel to the beach (surf beach) - the Padma, Mandira and Legian Beach Hotel. They are also close to lots of shopping, food etc.
Personally, we like to see the beach from the hotel grounds - all adds to the holiday.
