Hi surferchick! Your first time to Bali is going to blow your socks off! My hubby and i went over last year for the first time and we are going back in 4 weeks and cant wait. We were also looking at the beautiful villas that are available for our second trip BUT have decided to go resort style for the following reasons. when staying at resorts you are mixing with other people who have tips and advise and wisdom on this amazing country and you interact with the local staff, not to mention that when you rent a villa they usually have their own chef which may stop you and your family from dining out so often. When we first got off the plane in Denpasar we honestly wanted to hop straight back on and go home. It was 11pm and everything and everyone just seemed overwhelming ( you will know what i mean as you wait for your bags to come off the plane then exit the airport and you have a million people pulling you in different directions) But as soon as we walked into our gorgeous resort everthing seemed much better. by morning we were ready to greet the locals outside and in and around our hotel. I guess my point is (and this is my point only) that to stay in a villa for your first time, you may do your trip an injustice by not being in the heart of their culture. Oh and the resorts have happy hour as well! ha ha. What ever you end up deciding, you and your family will love Bali and the beautiful people that live there.
