At least the street money changers can be very fussy about the quality of the notes. You might be ok if you take them to a bank to change, but then you'll probably get shafted on the exchange fees.
In terms of security, you're probably better off changing them at home and sticking the cash in your bank account and using ATM's. But I don't know how that works out with exchange rate variations/fees/yaddayadda. I suppose you'd be hit with two exchange fees rather than one.
In any event, why are you holding onto US dollars? That thing's sinking like a turd from a diet that lacks fibre. It's dropped about 25% against the Euro since Bush took office. Odd that no-one mentions that -- you'd think now would be the perfect time to discuss it.
