The most "straight-forward" visa for more than two months is a Sosial Budaya (= "social visa", for visiting friends/relatives and so on). All you need is a "sponsor letter" from one of your Balinese friends and a copy of their KTP (local identity card). Plus a couple of passport-sized photos and a copy of your air ticket out of Indonesia. That'll give you 6 months - your visa will say you have 60 days. One week before the 60 days are up, you have to go to the Immigration office to extend it. The first time it costs around Rp 350,000 [approximately AUD 50] (depending on whom you deal with). The visa cost in Australia is about $65 ($125 if you want it the same day).
As for air-fares...I'd be inclined to check out Air Paradise's web-site. I'm not sure they fly out of Brisbane yet, but it's definitely worth checking.
Hope this helps (and if you need more info, please feel free to e-mail me directly).
