Accommodation in Bali

My friend & I are travelling to Bali in August. We would like to stay in Legian. Can anyone advise on accommodation? We don't want totally expensive but are happy to pay a bit more for something nice ie not old, or dated. Hotel Jayakarta & Puri Raya are the ones the travel agent is reccommending. Has anyone stayed at either?
Also any other tips or things to do for 2 newbies to Bali would be appreciated.
