Yes, I agree about the main pool looking rather uninviting and suspect! We must've stayed there at the same time as you (20th-28th June), but ended up doing too much shopping and only had a couple of hours beside the "blue" circular pool, which looked fine.
I had booked a new superior room by the pool too, but ended up being none available when we checked in, so was upgraded to a suite room overlooking the lap pool.
It was my first time at the MBR, and we transferred to the Dynasty on the 28th, which is much more expensive.I think for the price, the MBR was good value for money, and I would stay there again.
