I'm very security conscious at home in WA and I tend to have this attitude wherever I go. I tell everyone how safe Bali is, but I still lock doors and windows. It's 4 years since I was in Ubud and it seemed OK then, but sometimes things change, not always for the better.
I seem to remember you saying good things about the Tjampuhan Hotel. As you know, it's not out in the middle of nowhere, but I suppose it's pretty quiet around there in the middle of the night.
A friend was hurt during a bag-snatch in the middle of the day in Kuta. It can happen anywhere. It's certainly not a rare occurrence in the Perth area unfortunately.
