Yes, indeed, for many, things have gotten quite desperate since the Bali bombing. And, for yet another "Urban Myth" the thieves are not just Javanese workers employed on construction projects here in Bali.
Most banjars are 100% intolerant of theft. In our village, and in over six years, I have never heard of one burglary. The Balinese have a decisive way of dealing with thieves...they die if caught, and that's it, plain and simple.
