While I agree that most now tend to use meters either without being asked, or without argument if you do ask... not all meters are equal. Some of those buggers run at supersonic speed and you can end up paying double for your trip.
Don't be lulled into a false sense of security just because they have a meter. Not a big deal over a short trip, but if you use a taksi to go into Denpasar, the difference could add up to a fair bit.
