I'd been reading just backs for 8 months before I left and was terribly jealous so I figured I'd share my experience. It may be slightly different because my boyfriend is Indonesian so I spend time with his family as well, but I was quite a tourist too, so here goes.

Arrived in Bali and spent 2 days staying in Ubud and driving around Bali in a rented car (70,000Rp./day). My boyfriend's cousins drove the car and though they're from Lombok they did very well, especially driving through hectic Denpasar. Went to Lovina, Jimbiran bay (and toured the gardens of the Four season's hotel!), Tanah Lot (beautiful!) and generally wandered Bali. I love Ubud as a starting point and would suggest it to anyone!

Then on to Lombok, took the shuttle to Pandang Bai then got a ferry and a ride from Ketut's brother from Lembar harbour. Ferry costs about 7,100 Rp. Spent a couple of days with Ketut's family at their beautiful house near Narmada which is a lovely place to visit in Lombok.

Off then to Gili Trawangan for 2 weeks of relaxing in the sun. Prices were up but the cheapest is Mawar (6000Rp for single, 8000 Rp for double!) I stayed at Sandy Beach paying 40,000 Rp. All the prices were up in high season. I was very happy to see they moved the every growing number of bamboo simple restaurants back off the beach and it's quite lovely. If you have any questions about Gili Trawangan, I'd love to answer them for you!

The next big trip was off to Yogyakarta. We took a bus/ferry for 90000Rp. from Mataram to Yogya which took about 30 hrs. Nice bus, all Indonesians. Go to the bus station and ask. Yogya is one of the cleanest Asian cities I've ever seen. It's also very cheap. Take a Baicek (bicycle rikshaw) for transport. Went to Borobodour and Perambanan which are both amazing. The price since Aug. 1st is $5 US!!! which is unbelieveable. (by the way local price is 2,500 Rp.
Yogya is cheap, great for shopping etc.

Took a tourist bus home that had 5 seats accross instead of the usual 4. Very uncomfortable. The bus went to Mt. Bromo, where we took a jeep to the view point then to the crator for sunrise. Bromo is lovely and well worth the 3am start time! Our bus left 9am for Bali and we got to Kuta at 8pm. Shopped in Kuta in the morning, then headed for Ubud again and then quickly back to Lombok for the last few days in Gili Trawangan and Mataram.

So that's it! I was there 6 weeks and can't wait to go back! Indonesia is one of the most fascinating countries I've ever been to. The people are generous and kind and if you go, make sure you get to know them!
