Hi Trudi
Drivers will take you from a 1 minute drive to an all day drive if thats what you want and pay for.
They'll stay away or come with you depending on what you want them to do.
But it's great to have them come with you as they can be a great help in letting you know what things are or getting good prices for you.
All the guide books tell you not to tip because they don't want it to become customary but you wait until you get to know the person and they treat you like their best friend - then you try not giving them something - you can't do it - they're all just toooo nice.
Don't worry about the driver thing - they're mostly all pretty good. Heaps of people will give you their drivers name if you want them to.
