the only thing that happened as far as we were concerned was that British Airways, most irritatingly, insisted that we leave cutting our holiday short. We were there on a quick package tour (we only had 3 days to organise our trip), because we didn't have enough time to set up a PROPER holiday, there were no flights for the time we wanted to go etc. They pulled us out, gave us no compensation, ruined our holiday and there was ABSOLUTELY no trouble anywhere on Bali. We will NEVER go on a package again
I was also there in February '99 I also only heard about Ambon on my return. Having been four times to Bali, I feel that there really won't be any trouble, but if you really worried why not keep an eye on the British Foreign Office site which is at <http://www.fco.gov.uk> I believe that they repeatedly update their advice, and are not too quick to jump the gun over issues like this. If the FO is saying that something is wrong then I'm sure you get any other government to say the same thing too, and then your holiday insurance would click in and your money would be saved.
