Gifts for Balinese people?

We visited the Solomon Islands a few years ago, and we took little gifts like balloons & hairties for the villagers there, they were over the moon with such simple offerings.
Would gifts be appropriate in Bali?
If so, can anyone make suggestions as to what would be appreciated?
I live in N.Z. (so please no twinkies - we dont have them here lol)
