I agree that Kuta is crowded, plenty of hawkers ect.
But I didn't find it all that dirty, and after living in a small sleepy country town called Adelaide for 20 years, I loved the feeling of life all around me.
Having said that, next time I go to Bali (about 6 months from now), I'll stay in Tuban - it is a bit more relaxed, but still only a 10-15 min walk to the centre of Kuta.
It all depends what you want from your trip - if you want beautiful nature walks and a very relaxing time, spend at least a few days in Ubud. Shopping and a bit of life, spend some time in Kuta and/or Tuban.
After all, your trip to Bali will be what you make of it - just give yourself the change to feel the place rather than just seeing it, & I'm sure you will want to go back again & again.
