Customer Only parking signs

Just got back from 6 weeks in Bali and had a nice new Avanza to drive. However due to construction next door to where I was staying my car park was only available at night which meant that I had to park on the street (66 or Jl Raya Seminyak) a lot during the day. Has anyone else had problems with stores and restaurants telling you to move your car because 'customer only'? I had one guy threaten to damage the car (and push me around a bit) on 66 - a few locals gave him a hard word or two but he was pretty... Also had a bar and a printing business tell me to move my car (one was more flexible than the other). Is it just me or are these public roads - and parking spaces and hence first in first served etc? With the bar I did try and move around 5pm for them each day - and also varied where I parked a bit but some of these businesses think they own the road.

I do notice that many / most of the places with these signs rarely have customers park there (even if you want to park a car you can't because of the sign) - and the guy who got pushy with me had no such sign at all anyway.

Sorry for the rant!
