Young couple did not have enough money to pay for an ambulance, though I am surprised they did not think to knock on a few doors of other tourists in the hotel. I am sure others would have helped!

Kiwi dies after attack in Bali

A New Zealand man died after an alleged assault by staff at a Bali nightclub early on Sunday morning.

It appears the man was with a female companion when he was attacked by five or six people at the Bounty Disco bar in Kuta.

The Herald understands the woman was also struck with a bottle. Kuta police said six men were in custody but would not say whether charges had been laid.

A spokesman for the BIMC Hospital in Kuta, Deddy Suharatawan, told the Herald paramedics were called to the Sari Samudra Bungalows resort, where the man was staying, at about 6.30am on Sunday. He was unconscious and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman Emma Reilly said the New Zealand Embassy was providing support for the man's family.

And this is another report.

Former soldier Sean Headifen, 22, was on holiday with his girlfriend, Sarah, who his family says, tried unsuccessfully to get him medical attention.

His mother, Merrill Headifen, was told he could not afford an ambulance and did not have travel insurance. "I can't believe it. Make sure you've got insurance."

Grieving relatives and friends have been told that up to seven people had been questioned by police after the weekend death.

New Zealand embassy staff from Jakarta have been sent to Bali to liaise with police and help the family bring Mr Headifen's body home.

Miss Headifen said she understood her son, a Palmerston North property investor, became involved in a "brawl-type fight" in a bar overnight on Saturday. It was unclear how it started.

Family were told a barman hurled a bottle or glass at her son's head. The injured Kiwi was taken back to where he was staying with his girlfriend, who suffered arm injuries trying to break up the fight.

Mr Headifen floated in and out of consciousness that night. The couple tried to get help, but did not have enough cash on them to pay for an ambulance.

His girlfriend tried to keep Mr Headifen awake, but she eventually fell asleep. When she woke up, Mr Headifen lay dead beside her.

She returned to the bar with police that morning and identified those involved in the fight.

Family learned of the death on Sunday.
