The mother of a New Zealand man who died after being attacked in Bali at the weekend can now bring his body home after a public appeal raised the necessary money.

Merrill Headifen was shocked when she was told it would cost $8000 to return her 22-year-old son Sean's body back to Palmerston North - money which she did not have.

But the Palmerston North community rallied around, responding to an appeal launched by More FM Manawatu to raise the cash in just two hours.

Sean Headifen, a former soldier, died after being struck in the head with a bottle in a bar fight in Kuta on Sunday night.

Andreas Seran, a top Indonesian middleweight boxer, and three other men are being held by local police over the death.
