Bung Karno and most Indonesians were pro-Japanese during WW2.

The defeat of Japan on 15 August 1945, prompted Bung Karno to declare independence on 17 August 1945 with Japanese Intelligence Officers in attendance.

The defeat of Japan allowed the Dutch to return. Japanese trained and equipped Indonesians from Heiho and PETA fought the Dutch.

The Dutch Army left in 1949.
