If issued in Australia - is quite simply a 'certified' translation of your local State Drivers licence. Nothing More - Nothing Less!
It has no legal status whatsoever! Travel Insurance Companies do not require it!
The main problem in Bali - is Australians riding motor bikes (scooters, whatever) with an Australian car licence. It is of course - INADEQUATE!!
An IDP is cheap enough - issued as it is in Australia - by the Automobile Club for your state.
If you like the extra feeling of security it may offer - GO for it!
BUT!!
DEFINITELY not a legal requirement - and quite useless if your home licence does NOT cover driving whatever vehicle you have an 'incident' in!
