I hear you, I think Bali has changed alot over the last 10 years and acommodation is not super cheap like it used to be, especially if you want want 4-5 star. I have 2 kids (one is a teenager)so we need 2 rooms at most places and all the accom I like is $260 a night plus. I can't afford the Padma anymore as 2 rooms is over $500 (lovey hotel but quite big and in someways that becomes impersonal). Even a family room at the Dynasty is $300US a night. The only bargain we found was in Ubud. There are smaller cheaper places you can find but the larger beach front hotels are exy now, with the exception of the Kumala Pantia where you could get 2 interconnetcing rooms for $200 a night or less.
If you are considering Tuban look at the holiday inn. lovely resort on the beach but away from the hussle and bussle and not too big. They have one bedroom suits that have a sofa bed, this might suit the 3 of you.
