I find it depends on what the teller has.
I usually get a giggle from them when I ask for 'small money' in Balinese "pis cenek"- phonetically 'pess chenneck'. Or something close to that - they usually understand me!
In Indonesian "I need small money" is "Saya ingin uang kecil" (phonetically Sigh-a ing-in oo-ung ket-cheel).
If you start with a smile and first say "Boleh minta tolong (bowl-ay mint-a toe-long), meaning 'Please, I really need your help'....the courtesy of making the effort to ask, (and asking, not demanding) usually gets me a pile of small notes.
