It's sad if that is your experience, but it isn't mine.
One place we stay at each year all the staff come to greet us when we arrive, saying "Welcome Home!"
Some of my favourite Bali shops they say "Hi, please look around and if there is anything you want please tell me" which sure beats the way staff in shops at home treat me. At home I often have to 'hunt down' a staff member for assistance, and if I ask them if they can get me something in a different colour or size I sometimes feel like I am being a nuisance.
Many of the security guards smile and greet me, sometimes chatting about where I am off to or offering to flag down a taxi for me. But then, I always smile at them and greet them, and make small talk sometimes - treat them with respect, not as lackeys, or invisible.
