If you are in Ubud and even worth travelling up to for the day. I have been to Bali many times and done lots of different things and this one is a definite highlight. I found them on trip advisor and tried to book by email with no response so ended up calling them and booked in no problems for two two days time. Our day started with being picked up at 8.15 from our hotel in Ubud. We went to the Ubud markets where I have been countless times before but Ni Wayan made this a very Interesting visit. We even found mandarins from Australia and apples from New Zealand! We were able to purchase spices and I got some white tiger balm. My thongs broke while standing there so luckily we passed a shoe seller where I probably paid too much for a pair of sandals.
We then stopped at some rice paddies where the rice growing was explained. Then we were very close to the family compound of Wayan and Puspa in Laplapan Village.
Wayan warmly welcomed us with a refreshing lemon drink and explained about his family compound. I found this interesting as he had been adopted by his childless uncle and they had a very small family. Only 4 people now live there whereas their neighbours had over 20 and 30!! Ways was very numerous and a great speaker.
The class the began. There was about 20 in our class and I was amazed at Puspa's great organisational skills and the control she maintained of the group at all times. There was no confusion and we always knew what we were doing and the class flowed effortlessly. All ingredients were locally grown and sourced. Coconut oil processing was demonstrated. Our menus for the day consisted of chicken, tuna, and vegetable dishes. I was delighted as I don't eat red meat.
Recipes and notes were supplied at the end. We cooked up a feast! Kuah Wong Sup Jamur or Clear mushroom and vegetable soup.
Base Gede Bumbu Kuning or basic yellow sauce.

Pepesan Be Pasih pepes ikan or steamed fish in banana leaves.

Oh my goodness everything g was delicious.. My favourites were the soup, Tempe and boiled banana dessert.
I am going back next time as I have to take my husband he will love it. I took photos of all the completed dishes and have printed them out to put with the recipes so I can try and recreate them at home. Puspa even said we could email her with any questions regarding the ingredients. I highly recommend this cooking class....ten out of ten!
