Just use the same precautions you'd use at home. Skimmers are used in Australia too, not just Bali.

Having said that, I use only ATMs during my annual one month stay in Bali and have done since 2003 and never had my card/account compromised. I do take some emergency cash with me, but haven't had to use a money changer in 10 years now.

I check the card slot, just as I do at home, for anything stuck on. I make sure I have my card and money put away into my wallet before I even consider moving away from the ATM, even if people are waiting - they can wait a few more seconds.

I haven't heard too many stories of people having issues, but the usual one is people walking away without their cards. As has been said, the card is the last thing to come out, unlike at home where you get the card and then the money. Some ATMs will allow further transactions without re-entering the PIN if the card is left in, so I have known of accounts to be cleaned out by people hanging around waiting for a card to be left in.

Take your time, double check you have everything before you leave and you should be fine.
