I have found that there is a Bali for everyone. I am an Ubud girl, but it is a lot more touristy now than when I started to go there in 1986. But I don't go for the shopping or large resorts. I have never been to a shopping mall in Bali, never been to Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Nusa Dua.
So maybe you could consider east Bali. There were some unpretentious places on the water outside Candi Dasa, and I know there is a lot more over that way since I was last there. Perhaps someone could suggest a place over that way.
North Bali is black sand, easy Bali is white sand.
