maz, you are so wrong, it is a requirement that if you are a tourist/visitor to Indonesia and are staying at a private address you must register with the local Polisi. You are covered staying in a Hotel and most private Villa's when you check-in/register, these records are then passed on to the relevant authorities, but if you are staying in a private residence of family or friends it is a LEGAL requirement by the Indonesian Gvmnt that you register and has been for a couple of years, and if you don't, and they are having a bit of a crack down on it, you may face heavy fines and possible deportation. As Charliebalibear said, it's a simple process.
