Having spent some time in the Northern Territory buffalo shooting back in the late 70's I can assure you it would take more than a stick with a nail in it to bring a tear to a buffalo's eye, don't let a bit of blood fool you, they are very thick skinned.
I have read where a lot of Westerners/tourists have voiced their dissatisfaction at the treatment of these animals at the races, this is probably why the locals would rather you just stayed away and let them get on with their traditions.
