I was told the same rubbish by Telstra but it's not required.
I called them they did the unlock thing at their end and then an hour later I put another SIM (Vodaphone) into the phone and after a couple of minutes I had a notification on the screen (which I forget what it said) and then I had Vodaphone reception. I did that on iOS5.1.1 on a iPhone 4S.
